On a chilly Friday night at the Oklahoma Christian soccer fields, OC's men's and women's teams earned important conference victories against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.
Following more than 80 minutes of scoreless action in the men's matchup between the 16th-ranked Eagles and the 11th-ranked Drovers, OC's Cristian Fernandes was fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Phillip Hoover's shot found the net under the USAO goalkeeper for the contest's first goal.
Six minutes later, Fernandes sealed the game with a chip shot over the goalkeeper's head from 20 yards out.
"The guys really played great and rose up to the challenge." OC head coach David Scott said. "This is a huge win for us. It gets us back in the conference race."
Eagle goalkeeper Brian Cochrum earned the shutout with five saves. The victory runs OC's record to 9-3-2 overall and 5-3-2 in conference play. USAO is 10-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in conference.
OC's Lady Eagles entered the game as the NAIA's 11th-ranked women's team and needed just one win to set the school record for victories in a season.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Drovers battled to a 0-0 halftime tie, but OC freshman Heather Spencer connected in the 52nd minute on a 35-yard shot into the back corner.
Four minutes later, Stephanie Duncan sent a long pass into the box, which Taryn Caylor fired in to give OC a 2-0 lead. Caylor is the reigning NAIA Region VI and Sooner Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Duncan rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 69th minute off a pass from Kristin Brown.
The record-setting win gave the Lady Eagles a 13-0-2 overall record and a 9-0-2 mark in conference play.
The Eagles and Lady Eagles next take the field for a Tuesday, Oct. 24 home doubleheader against John Brown University. The women's game will kick off at 5 p.m., with the men to follow at 7 p.m.
