OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Oct. 31, 2008) – Oklahoma Christian picked up conference wins in men's and women's soccer on Friday afternoon at Mid-America Christian (Okla.).
The Lady Eagles won 4-2, and the Eagles took a 3-0 victory. The game was the final regular-season match for the men's squad which currently sits in sixth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Women's game:
The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead over MACU just 53 seconds into the game when Heather Spencer scored. Shortly before the end of the first stanza, OC upped its edge to 2-0 when Emily Spirek chimed in at 38:30.
The teams traded a pair of goals in the second half which saw a total of four balls find the back of the net
The Lady Evangels cut the lead in half when Lindsey Neher scored a 51st-minute goal to make it 2-1. Then OC answered with a Stephanie Duncan score at 72:45 to pad the cushion to 3-1.
With the game seemingly over, the teams fired in two more scores in the game's final 10 minutes. Neher started things by scoring at 83:50. But it was too little, too late as OC's Emma Cole put it away with an insurance goal at the 87:55 mark.
The victory sends the Lady Eagles to 8-7-1 overall and 4-4 in the SAC – good for sixth in the league standings. The team has two more games remaining beginning on Monday at home vs. Northwestern Oklahoma State. OC wraps up the regular season at Science and Arts on Tuesday.
Men's game:
The Eagles rode a strong defensive performance and an explosive second half to a regular-season-ending 3-0 thumping of MACU.
The game was knotted in a 0-0 tie at halftime, but OC went off in the second stanza to put the contest on ice.
Senior Kyle Spencer got it going when he netted a 55th-minute goal off an assist from Cristian Fernandes to make it 1-0.
Then Preston Okwuonu cashed in two goals in a three-minute span to pull OC away. The junior from Edmond, Okla., scored at the 74:15 and 77:25 junctions.
Bryan Cochrum had another outstanding performance in goal. The Arlington, Texas, senior snagged five saves to keep the Evangels off the scoreboard.
The victory takes the Eagles' record to 6-7-3 overall and 3-4-1 in the SAC. The team now awaits its conference tournament assignment. The postseason tournament begins on Nov. 7.
