PLAINVIEW, Texas (April 24, 2009) – After leading 6-2 through four innings, Oklahoma Christian University dropped the first game of a doubleheader at No. 24 Wayland Baptist University (Texas) 12-8 in west Texas on Saturday. The Pioneers won the nightcap 8-1.
The Eagles (18-24, 9-16 in the Sooner Athletic Conference) erupted for six runs in the first inning of the opener. Zac Coshow ripped a three-run home run out to left field to kickstart the frame. Tyler Gipson drove in two with a triple before Chance Nichols plated Gipson with a double to put the Eagles ahead 6-0 before Wayland Baptist picked up a bat.
OC starter Ryan Morris held the Pioneers in check for the first four innings, but WBU scored 10 runs on nine hits in the fifth inning to blow the game open. The Eagles used three pitchers in the inning as the Pioneers cranked out three extra-base hits.
The Eagles got two runs back in the top of the seventh when Nichols ripped a two-run shot, but OC failed to add on any more.
Nichols went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and his team-best ninth long ball of the season. Gipson went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Coshow drove in three with his seventh bomb of the year.
Morris took the loss to fall to 4-6 on the year. He lasted 4.1 innings and struck out three.
OC got off to another quick start in the second game before being outscored 8-0 in the final six innings.
The Eagles led 1-0 in the first when Ray Long led off the game with a solo homer. But the Eagles managed just five hits the rest of the way. WBU took the lead with a two-run second and tacked on six more runs the rest of the way to improve to 38-11 overall and 17-9 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Coshow (2-fo-3) and Jeff Davis (2-for-2) had two-hit showings for the Eagles. Long joined Nichols for the team home run lead with his ninth shot. Tyler Sutton (2-4) suffered the loss with five innings of seven-run work.
The teams complete their three-game set with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilder Field.
