OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (August 29, 2009) – The Oklahoma Christian University Lady Eagles opened up the season with a 5-0 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan University while the Eagles came away with a 2-1 victory.
The Lady Eagles opened the first half with a quick goal by Heather Spencer off an assist by Angela Pete. Later in the half, OC got back-to-back goals from Stephanie Duncan and Spencer, who were assisted by Hanna Jackson and Emma Cole, respectively.
The OC women were dominant throughout the first half, allowing just one shot on goal. The second half again saw them quick with their feet and fast to the ball. Late in the half, Callie White assisted on a Hope Heinen score, then Kacie Hoppe was fouled in the box, leading to a successful penalty kick that made the final score 5-0.
On the men's side, Oklahoma Christian started quickly, with an early goal scored by Cristian Fernandes off a well-placed assist by Pablo Hernandez.
Oklahoma Wesleyan's Vivian Gonsalves answered with a goal via an assist by Cameel Horanny. But with just a few minutes remaining in the first half, the Eagles' Peter Gordon found the back of the net off an assist from Tommy Guernsey.
Gordon's goal ended up being the game-winner. In the second half, the Eagles' defense kept Oklahoma Wesleyan from scoring and OC held on for the 2-1 victory. The Eagles totaled 12 shots on goal while limiting the OWU men to only four total shots on goal.
Both the men's and women's games saw large crowds of close to 500 fans, including several hundred new freshmen in attendance to help cheer on the OC soccer teams.
The Lady Eagles and Eagles (both now 1-0 on the season) get their first road tests of the year next weekend. OC's women play at the University of Texas-Tyler on Friday, followed by a women's/men's doubleheader at Northwood University (Texas) on Saturday.
The Lady Eagles return home to host Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Sept. 8. The Eagles' next home game is Sept. 11 against Lindenwood (Mo.).
