SHAWNEE, Okla. (Feb. 26, 2011) – The Oklahoma Christian women's basketball team claimed an 84-71 victory over Oklahoma Baptist University in their final regular season game of the season on Saturday night.
The Oklahoma Baptist women sunk the first basket before the Lady Eagles' Ayanna Jackson responded with a trey to give OC a one-point lead. Four more lead changes ensued directly thereafter as two squads battled for an advantage.
With 16:26 still left in the period, the score was tied up at 9-9 before the Lady Eagles put together a 9-2 run to lead 18-11 with 13:46 showing on the clock.
Two minutes later, OC pushed the margin to 11 points before the squads went on a scoring drought for several minutes. A three-point basket from Katy Clift put the Lady Eagles up by 14 and moments later OC took their largest lead of the half at 16 with just 2:41 till the half.
After a couple exchanges of baskets, the Lady Bison were able to close the gap to 10 points before heading to the locker rooms for halftime.
Early in the second half, back-to-back three pointers were seen from Tarynn Branscumm and Clift, jumping the OC lead back up to 16 just over two minutes in.
Shortly following, the Lady Bison managed to put up a 12-2 run to close the Lady Eagle margin to just five points with 13:53 showing on the clock. A minute later, the OBU women close the gap to four points before OC put up seven unanswered points to lead by 11.
From that point on, the Lady Eagles carried a lead of at least eight points until the buzzer. Multiple attempts were made by the Lady Bison to cut the OC gap, but a determined Lady Eagle squad held a 13-point lead when the buzzer sounded giving OC the 84-71 win.
Krista Steven led the Lady Eagles against OBU as she shot a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc and a perfect 10-for-10 at the line. Including 6-for-8 shooting from the field, Stevens tallied 25 points and nine rebounds.
Clift and Jackson both helped out as well with 21 and 22-point performances, respectively.
The win leaves the Lady Eagles with a final regular season record of 15-15 and a conference record of 9-13. The OC men's and women's basketball teams will now turn their focus toward the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament scheduled to begin on Thursday.
