Don Towner, shown here earlier this season, scored the goal for OC in a 1-1 tie with Oklahoma City University.
OKLAHOMA CITY (Sept. 27, 2011) – There's apparently little that separates Oklahoma Christian and Oklahoma City University's men's soccer teams.
For the second time this season, the Eagles and Stars ended a game deadlocked. Adam Black scored with under four minutes left in regulation, allowing OCU (2-2-3, 0-0-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) to salvage a 1-1 tie Tuesday night against visiting OC (4-1-3, 0-0-1) at Stars Field.
The two teams fought to a 2-2 tie on Sept. 3 during a nonconference game and Tuesday's game was just as close.
Don Towner gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 61st minute. Tommy Guernsey made a long run down the sideline for OC, then passed the ball to Duc Huynh, who dished off to Towner in front of the goal. Towner's shot easily beat OCU goalkeeper Joe Shulberg.
The Eagles tried to milk that lead the rest of the way, but Black's score came off a deflection by teammate Ryan Hunter and forced overtime.
Both teams had good scoring chances during the two 10-minute overtimes. In the second extra period, OC's Trey Boykin just missed the goal on a header off a corner kick. Moments later, Black had a shot from close range blocked by OC goalkeeper Tim Spencer.
Not long after that, a shot by OCU's Nathan Doll following a corner kick appeared headed for the back of the net before OC midfielder Domenico DeGrazia cleared the ball off the goal line.
Spencer had six saves for the Eagles, while Shulberg made three saves for OCU.
OC will host its first SAC game on Saturday, when the Eagles will play Southern Nazarene.
