Ryan Morris threw a complete game against Wayland Baptist on Friday to pick up his second win of the season.
OKLAHOMA CITY (March 2, 2012) – The Oklahoma Christian Eagles swept Wayland Baptist (Texas) 6-2 and 9-6 on Friday to record their first two Sooner Athletic Conference wins of the season and snap a five-game losing streak.
OC (5-5, 2-5 SAC) had opened conference play with five straight losses against ranked foes Rogers State and Lubbock Christian (Texas). The Eagles had an easier time of it against Wayland Baptist (8-12, 0-5), getting a complete-game outing from Ryan Morris in the first game and a strong 6 1/3-inning relief stint in the second game.
The Pioneers managed 11 hits off Morris (2-2) but only two runs, both in the top of the second, as Chris Buitron hit an RBI double and later scored to put Wayland Baptist up 2-0.
OC tied the game in the bottom of the inning and went ahead 4-2 in the third, an inning highlighted by Dillon Andrews' steal of home as part of a double steal with Heath Steele. Jerry Owen's two-run single in the fifth inning off Wayland Baptist starter Ryan Downs (1-3) put OC up 6-2.
The Pioneers chased OC's second-game starter, Luke Sandoval, with four runs in the top of the first inning, but Mendez (2-0) came in and allowed three hits and two runs the rest of the way.
A six-run second-inning outburst gave the Eagles the lead. Heath Steele had a two-run double and Wes Dorough added a two-run single off Wayland Baptist starter Jace Chancellor (1-3).
The Pioneers tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the third on a two-run single by Josh Carroll, but OC took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, as Jerry Owen doubled and scored on Caleb Price's single. The Eagles tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the fourth.
Steele went 3-for-3 while Tanner Hessman, Chris Miller and Owen each contributed two hits to OC's 12-hit attack.
The Eagles and Pioneers will play a single nine-inning game Saturday.
