Heath Steele hit a key two-run double for OC in a 5-4 loss to Lubbock Christian in the first game of a doubleheader. Lubbock Christian won the second game 10-0.
LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 24, 2012) – Jordan Lewis went 5-for-8 and No. 4-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) picked up a pair of complete games from pitchers Tyler Rogers and Shane Ingram to sweep Oklahoma Christian 5-4 and 10-0 on Friday at Hays Field.
OC (3-3, 0-3 Sooner Athletic Conference) managed only eight hits during the doubleheader, but still almost pulled off the upset against last season's NAIA runner-up.
Rogers struck out 14 batters in the opener and the Chaparrals staked him to a quick 3-0 lead after two innings. OC scratched out a run in the third, as Evan Draper doubled to left field and Caleb Price followed with a RBI single. Price eventually advanced to third base with one out, but Rogers fanned Tanner Hessman and Dillon Andrews to end the threat.
Two OC errors in the fourth led to a Lubbock Christian run that made it 4-1, but the Eagles rallied to tie the game in the sixth. With two outs, Andrews singled up the middle and went to second base on an error. Jerry Owen walked and he and Andrews pulled off a successful double steal. Chris Miller reached on another error as Andrews scored and Heath Steele followed with a double to left-center field to bring home two runs.
But the Eagles' defense in the seventh inning proved to be their demise. Leading off, Lewis reached on a throwing error by Owen, then stole second base. Ryan Burnaman followed with a sacrifice bunt, but Draper – covering first – couldn't handle the throw from pitcher Ryan Morris and Lewis came around to score easily.
Morris (1-2) allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out three in six-plus innings for OC. Morris (3-0) allowed five hits and walked one for the Chaparrals.
The second game wasn't nearly as close. Karl Seiter put Lubbock Christian (8-5, 1-0) ahead with a three-run home run in the first off OC starter Ryan Nash (0-1) and the Chaparrals cruised from there behind Ingram (2-0), who allowed three hits and struck out 10 batters.
Nash allowed 10 hits and fanned three in 4 2/3 innings.
The Eagles and Chaparrals will wrap up their three-game series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday afternoon.
