Wes Dorough went 2-for-4 with an RBI for OC in a 5-4 loss to Bacone.
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 10, 2012) – Bacone turned four double plays, including a key one to end the eighth inning, and the Warriors held on to beat Oklahoma Christian 5-4 on Tuesday at Dobson Field.
OC (7-26) trailed 5-3 entering the eighth but took advantage of a single by Tanner Hessman and three walks to draw within 5-4. With one out and the bases loaded, pinch-hitter Daniel Thompson hit a fly ball to right field. Bacone's Cody McBride caught it for the second out and threw a strike to catcher Lester Gonzalez, who tagged Hessman out to end the inning.
OC's first five batters of the game all reached base but the Eagles managed only two runs, on RBI singles by Dillon Andrews and Wes Dorough. A baserunning error by Heath Steele resulted in one out and Chris Miller hit into an inning-ending double play.
Bacone (23-16) did most of its damage in the second inning against OC starter Derek James (0-1). The Warriors scored four runs – three of them scoring after OC third baseman Blain Elliott misplayed a two-out line drive by Enrique Mesa, allowing it to roll into left field.
The Warriors made it 5-2 in the fourth, as McBride singled and later scored on a single to left field by Mesa.
James lasted 3 2/3 innings – his longest stint of the season – and gave up seven hits and five runs (two earned). Four other OC pitchers – Joseph Murphy, Davis Matlock, Jacob Stephenson and Ryan Morris – combined to blank the Warriors the rest of the way.
Bacone also turned double plays in the third and fifth innings, the latter time after OC loaded the bases with no outs against Sean Callahan (2-0). Callahan threw seven innings for the Warriors, allowing six hits. Dorough had two of those hits for OC.
Garrett Stephenson singled and scored in the seventh for the Eagles. In the eighth, Bacone reliever Johnny Kiska walked Steele, and one out later, Hessman singled. Pinch-hitter Collin Pope walked to load the bases and chase Kiska. Adam Huizar walked Stephenson to force in a run before McBride's heroics.
Huizar retired the Eagles in order in the ninth and recorded his first save of the baseball season.
Bacone won despite committing five errors.
OC will try to snap a 21-game losing streak on Thursday when the Eagles travel across town to face No. 3-ranked Oklahoma City University.
