Senior pitcher Heath Orndorff pitched in his final home game Thursday as OC lost 9-5 to Mid-America Christian.
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 26, 2012) – Mid-America Christian used a five-run fifth inning to spoil Oklahoma Christian's final home baseball game of the season and beat the Eagles 9-5 on Thursday night at Dobson Field.
OC (8-32, 3-25 Sooner Athletic Conference) jumped to a 4-0 lead, but there would be no storybook ending for OC senior pitcher Ryan Morris or coach Chuck White, who coached the Eagles for the final time in the stadium he helped build.
Jerry Owen's two-run double keyed the Eagles' three-run first. OC went up 4-0 in the third inning after Owen doubled and scored on Cody Alsup's single.
Morris (2-11) was effective for four innings, allowing only one run, but ran into trouble in the fourth against MACU (7-38, 3-25). The Evangels touched the right-hander for five hits and five runs, two on a single up the middle by Andrew Smith. That brought on reliever Heath Orndorff, who stopped any further damage from happening, but MACU was up 6-4 and never trailed after that.
OC pulled within 6-5 in the sixth, as Dillon Andrews reached on a bunt single and eventually scored on an error. But the Evangels responded with a run in the top of the seventh and two more in the ninth on an error by relief pitcher Harrison Mendez.
The Eagles never threatened to rally, managing only two baserunners in their final three at-bats.
MACU starter Grant Zimmerman (1-2) allowed 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings but still picked up the pitching win.
Andrews went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for OC, while Owen, Blain Elliott and Alsup each had two hits. Kory Palmer went 3-for-5 for the Evangels.
The Eagles and Evangels will play a doubleheader on Saturday at MACU to close the season.
