CANYON, Texas - No. 22 Oklahoma Christian held the lead three separate times in game one of the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals against No. 6 West Texas A&M, but five home runs propelled the Lady Buffs over the Eagles, 6-5.
Danae Lopez (2-for-3),
Kiley Brewster (2-for-3) and
Marti Yaerger each recorded two hits in the effort, with Brewster and Yaerger adding a pair of RBI to their line. Both teams recorded nine hits in the contest, but it was WT with with six extra-base hits compared to just one for OC.
After George opened play with a single, marking her fifth consecutive at-bat with a hit, leading-hitter Ki. Brewster put OC on the board first with a two-out RBI-single to score the Eagles' lead-off batter. The NCAA's leading home run team claimed its first run in the home-half, with a 1-1 ballgame heading into the second.
West Texas A&M took a brief lead in the second before Yaerger gave the lead back to the maroon-and-gray with a two-RBI single in the top of the fourth, 3-2. Over the next two innings, the Lady Buffs forced two more ties as the back-and-forth contest continued.
Dickson relieved starter Resendiz in the circle in the bottom of the sixth with the score tied, 5-5. West Texas A&M delivered the final lead change in the bottom of the sixth, however, with its fifth home run of the contest. Despite George reaching base safely for the third time of the afternoon, she was left at second base as WT took game one, 6-5.Â
No. 22 Oklahoma Christian will return to Schaeffer Park in 24 hours for game two of the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regionals at 4 p.m. CT. An if-necessary game three will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. CT with the winner heading to Chatanooga, Tenn., for the Women's College World Series.
