EDMOND, Okla. - Fueled by a career performance from Ahniya Melton as well as a season-high showing from Elikya Baseyila, Oklahoma Christian defeated Eastern New Mexico Thursday evening, 66-55.
Ahniya Melton recorded 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting while Elikya Baseyila added 14. Along with Taylor Jackson's 19, serving as her 13th game with 15 or more points, the trio combined for 49 of OC's 66 points. Sofia Lopez gave the Lady Eagles a season-high 32 minutes, efficiently operating against the Greyhound press for 10 points and three assists.
The maroon-and-gray shot a staggering 50 percent (14-for-28) from the floor in the first half, giving them a 33-22 lead at the break. Eastern New Mexico made a run late in the third into the fourth, cutting the lead to just one, but the stellar shooting and paint dominance by OC was too much for the Greyhounds.
With the score leaning OC's way at the 9:41 mark of the fourth quarter, 46-45, a quick seven-run burst fueled Oklahoma Christian to the final buzzer, 66-55. The maroon-and-gray's defense held ENMU without a field-goal for the final 3:40 of regulation.
Winners in four of its last five, Oklahoma Christian (9-11, 5-8 LSC) will return to the Payne Athletic Center Saturday, Feb. 7, when it takes on No. 7 West Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
