SAN ANGELO, Texas - Oklahoma Christian got its best starting pitching performance of the season from
Corbin Kwan in game one of Saturday's doubleheader as Oklahoma Christian took the first half of the twin bill over ABCA No. 12 Angelo State, 2-0, before falling in game two, 17-4.
Kwan (2-1), a junior transfer from Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, struck out a season-high nine ASU batters in six scoreless innings of work, allowing two hits and walking three. The Edmond, Okla., native faced just 22 batters in an 18-minimum. Following Kwan's gem was
Evan Ballast, who claimed his third save of the season after getting the final three outs.
Justin Spencer was the only Eagle to claim multiple hits in one of the outings, finishing his day going 3-for-5 with two doubles, both of which came in game two.
Trey Migl reached base safely four times on the afternoon, working three walks while claiming one hit in the game-one win. Â
Game One: Oklahoma Christian 2, No. 12 Angelo State 0
After Angelo's lead-off man hit a single, Kwan retired the next seven batters in order as ASU did not see a base runner get past second base until the seventh inning. The Eagles' bats were able to do just enough to not waste Kwan's gem, scoring the first run of the game in the top of the fourth.
Following an RBI-ground out from
Hunter Sandifer, the maroon-and-gray responded to another three-up, three-down inning from Kwan with a second run in the top of the fifth on a fielder's choice from
Ruben Castro to bring
Hank Heiselbetz home following one of his two walks in the outing.
In two of the final three innings, Angelo put two runners on base, including runners on the corners with just one out in the bottom of the seventh as the game-winning run came to the plate. Ballast threw ASU into OC's second defensive double play of the game, claiming his third save of the season and the three-hit shutout for Oklahoma Christian.
Game Two: No. 12 Angelo State 17, Oklahoma Christian 4
Oklahoma Christian kept pace with Angelo State through the first three innings, tying it up at 3-3 after two and a half frames and then cutting the deficit to one after three and a half, 5-4, but 12 runs between the fourth and fifth inning put the Rams out of reach.
Following a Spencer RBI-double in the top of the second to give OC its first run of the game, Castro and Hennesy recorded back-to-back RBI-singles to give play its first tie at 3-3. After Spencer's recorded his second double of the game in the top of the fourth before eventually being brought home by
Elijah Laus, the Eagles claimed just one more hit the rest of the way.
