Munson’s Brace, Wooten Play Between the Posts Earn Eagles Win Over St. Mary’s

EDMOND - Oklahoma Christian women's soccer earned a thrilling 2-1 victory over Lone Star Conference opponent St. Mary's (TX) on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Soccer Field, powered by a two-goal performance from forward Jenna Munson and critical goalkeeping by Breanna Wooten. With the win, the Eagles improved to 7-4-0 overall and 4-3-0 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Rattlers fell to 5-5-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference action.

Oklahoma Christian set the tempo early with strong possession and struck first in the 29th minute. Jordan Tanges and Jaycie Daggs set up the opening goal, feeding Munson, who buried her third goal of the season past the keeper to put the Eagles up 1-0. OC controlled 57% of the total possession in the match and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Eagles picked up right where they left off to begin the second half, doubling their lead just under five minutes after the restart. In the 50th minute, Caid Jefferson connected with Munson, who found the back of the net for her second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the season to extend the margin to 2-0.

St. Mary's put heavy pressure on the Eagles in response and were awarded a penalty kick in the 56th minute. Wooten came through with a clutch save on Helen Lazaro's penalty kick attempt, but the Rattlers capitalized on the immediate second chance as Marily Garza Contreras scored unassisted seconds later at 56:21 to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Rattlers pushed hard for an equalizer in the closing minutes, but Wooten and the Eagle backline stood tall. Wooten finished with eight saves on nine shots on target to earn her seventh win of the season. Munson led the attack with five total shots and four on goal, while Tanges and Jefferson each provided crucial assists to secure the 2-1 victory.

Notes

  • The win was the Eagles first of St. Mary's since 2017, and their third in their last four chances.

  • Munson's goals were her third and fourth on the season, bringing her to second most on the team.
