WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Trailing by 14 with seven minutes to go, Oklahoma Christian fought all the way back to tie the game with 1:46 left before Midwestern State escaped with the 73-68 victory from D.L. Ligon Coliseum Saturday.
Miles Gibson scored a team-high 21 points along with eight rebounds, followed by
Carson Jones with 13, including four made three-pointers.
Jason Clark and
Elijah Bailey followed with 11 each, while Oklahoma Christian managed just 12 more points.
Midwestern State saw a 33-8 advantage in bench points while just edging the maroon-and-gray in points off turnovers and second-chance points, 14-9 and 9-4, respectively.
After taking a six-point lead into the break, MSU opened a 14-point advantage four different times in the second half, but OC continued to fight back. With its final 14-point lead with a little over seven minutes in regulation, an ensuing 18-4 Eagle run delivered the game's first tie since it was 11-11 in the first half.
After going over 13 minutes of game action since hitting a three-pointer, Midwestern came through with a desperation heave four feet back of the three-point line to beat the shot clock with 33 seconds left to play. A called offensive foul on the other end allowed MSU to ice it with a pair of free-throws, 73-68.
Oklahoma Christian (9-9, 4-8 LSC) will return to the Payne Athletic Center when it hosts No. 18 Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m.
