EDMOND, Okla. - After shooting 6-of-11 from three-point range in the first half, Oklahoma Christian failed to convert on any of its 12 attempts in the second half as the Eagles left the Payne Athletic Center after falling to St. Mary's, 72-68.
Elijah Bailey tied his season high with 20 points on 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) shooting, followed by
Carson Jones with 18 points, three assists and three steals. Outside of Bailey and Jones, the maroon-and-gray scored just 30 points as StMU outscored OC in bench points, 19-7.
The Eagles made all six of their six triples in the game's first 13 minutes, holding a 29-28 lead with 7:11 on the clock. From that point on, St. Mary's used a run 10-2 to help take a five-point lead into the break, 40-35.
Oklahoma Christian saw several opportunities to take a lead in the second half, even tying the game with 11:45 remaining in regulation, 46-46, but were never able to break through as near-misses from three stalled any comeback effort. While OC was unable to hit from long range in the second half, St. Mary's converted on one second-half triple to keep the Eagles just at bay.
In one final effort at cutting into the deficit, OC came within two at the 1:54 mark, but a couple fortuitous bounces went the way of the Rattlers to keep the visitor's lead intact before the final buzzer, 72-68.
Oklahoma Christian (9-8, 4-7 LSC) will travel to Wichita Falls, Texas, to take on Midwestern State Saturday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. before returning to The Nest Thursday, Feb. 5 against No. 19 Eastern New Mexico.
