ALPINE, Texas -
Tristan Copeland (2-4) delivered his second 13-strikeout game of the season in the day's second contest against Sul Ross State as Oklahoma Christian won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader, 10-5 and 13-1.
Thanks to Copeland's standout performance in game two, the Eagles' 13-1 victory clinched the series victory for OC in the regular season's final weekend series.
Accompanying Copeland's superb showing was 13-strikeouts - his second such game of the season - while allowing just one run on two hits and walking one batter. The first time the Albuquerque, N.M., native recorded 13 strikeouts in one game this season, he was named the NCBWA South Central Region Pitcher of the Week.
Grant Voss and
Jontae Hennesy each recorded a pair of hits in both games, while Hennesy reached base a total of five times in the afternoon's second game with his two hits and three walks.
Game One: Oklahoma Christian 10, Sul Ross St. 5
- Starting pitcher Chris Jones (5-4) allowed Sul Ross the first three runs of the game in the first inning, but held SRSU scoreless for the next four innings, allowing just two more hits during that stretch.
- After a single run in the second to cut the Lobos lead to 3-1, Oklahoma Christian grabbed the lead with a five-run third, sparked by a two-RBI triple from Trey Migl.
- After a scoreless fourth, OC put the finishing touches on Saturday's game-one win with four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings for a 10-5 lead after six frames.
- Dalin Privett relieved Jones in the seventh to maintain Oklahoma Christian's 5-run lead, with SRSU's only base runner during his outing coming via a fielding error, otherwise putting the Lobos down in order.
Game Two: Oklahoma Christian 13, Sul Ross St. 1
- Sul Ross' first two base runners came courtesy of OC fielding errors as Copeland did not allow his first legitimate base runner until a solo shot put the Lobos on the board in the fourth inning.
- Oklahoma Christian quickly took advantage of Copeland's stifling work with four runs in the second inning, all of which came on two outs.
- Following SRSU's single run in the fourth off of one hit, the Eagle hurler retired 12 of the final 13 Lobos, including recording the game's final three outs courtesy of strikeout.
- With Oklahoma Christian holding a 7-1 lead, the maroon-and-gray shut the door with a six-run seventh to give the game's final tally, 13-1. Conner Wyatt used his first home run of the season to plate three of the six final-inning runs.
