ALPINE, Texas - Leading by one run after five innings, Oklahoma Christian scored 11 runs in the game's final two innings while holding Sul Ross St. scoreless over that time as OC defeated SRSU in game one of the series Friday afternoon, 18-6.
Following the Eagles' five-run sixth to extend their lead from one to six runs,
Ira Clifton occupied the mound the final two innings, holding Sul Ross scoreless to help claim the run-rule victory. Clifton faced just seven batters, striking out four Lobos while allowing one walk and not giving up a single hit.
Across the seven innings, OC's pitchers allowed just four hits, with three of them coming in the fourth inning alone. Four hits is tied for the third fewest the maroon-and-gray have allowed all season.
Trey Migl and
Justin Spencer fueled the offensive side of things for Oklahoma Christian as the duo each recorded two home runs.
Ryan Carolan and
Elijah Laus joined the pair to comprise OC's six homers on the afternoon - its second most in a game this season.
The entire nine-man lineup for Oklahoma Christian claimed a hit in the first-ever meeting against Sul Ross State. Migl (3-for-4) and Spencer (3-for-5) each recorded three hits while Carolan (2-for-4), Laus (2-for-2) and
Cason Gregory (2-for-5) also recorded multiple hits.
How it happened
- Oklahoma Christian slowly built its lead with a single run in the first inning, two runs in the second and then three in the third. Home runs from Migl and Spencer plated the first two Eagle runs in route to their 7-0 lead after three frames.
- Up till that point, Sull Ross' first nine batters had been sat down in early. The Lobos' first hit of the game came in the first batter of the fourth inning before a two-run shot yielded a three-hit, five-run frame to cut OC's lead to two, 7-5.
- Another SRSU run in the fifth marked the final run for the Lobos' afternoon. From there, OC allowed just one base runner while scoring 11 unanswered. Four of the five sixth-inning runs came off the bat of Carolan with a two-out grand slam before a six-run seventh cued the run-rule, 18-6.
