EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian fell by a combined three runs against Texas A&M-Kingsville from Dobson Baseball Field Friday night, 6-5 and 9-7.
Jontae Hennesy and
Michael Adair claimed three hits in game one and game two, respectively, while Adair also added a hit in game one to finish 4-for-8 with seven RBI for the day.
Hunter Jones added two RBI in the second game despite not registering a hit.
Oklahoma Christian (5-13, 5-13 LSC) will have a day off before meeting this same Texas A&M-Kingsville team in the second half of this four-game weekend series Sunday, Mar. 9 at 1 p.m.
Game One: Texas A&M-Kingsville 6, Oklahoma Christian 5 (8 inn.)
The game's first six runs came courtesy of home runs, starting out with Texas A&M-Kingsville's solo shot in the first inning. In the bottom of the second inning, Hennesy came through with a two-out solo home run to tie the game, 1-1.
In OC's next at-bat,
Michael Adair took a turn at sending one over the wall with a three-run shot in the third to extend the Eagles' lead, 4-1. Hennesy then completed the maroon-and-gray's scoring with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fourth for the 5-1 advantage.
While Oklahoma Christian's offense established the four-run lead, starting pitcher
Chris Jones allowed just three hits through six innings as the Eagles went into the top of the seventh of the previously-scheduled seven-inning game in command. After a lead-off single followed by a walk,
Naut Kragt relieved Jones, but TAMUK made the most of the little bit of momentum shift.
Three hits and a hit-by-pitch later, Kingsville extended play to the bottom of the seventh with a four-run top of the frame. Oklahoma Christian was unable to respond as play moved to extra innings. A single run in the top of the eighth completed the comeback as a scoreless bottom of the eighth handed TAMUK the game-one win.
Game Two: Texas A&M-Kingsville, 9, Oklahoma Christian 7
For game two, it was the Javelinas' turn to race out to the 5-1 lead. In the fifth, OC plated three runs, thanks to a
Hunter Jones RBI-sacrifice fly and an Adair two-RBI-single in the fifth inning to cut the TAMUK lead, 5-4.
Texas A&M-Kingsville cut the comeback short, however, scoring four unanswered runs over the next four innings. Now holding a 9-4 lead, Oklahoma Christian threatened the lead with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, including another Adair two-RBI-double, while bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs.
The Javelinas brought in a new pitcher to get the final out as a ground-out to third gave game two to Kingsville, 9-7.
