AUSTIN, Texas - After trailing by seven runs heading into the ninth inning, Oklahoma Christian rattled off six runs before being forced to leave the bases loaded, coming up one run shy of No. 14 St. Edward's in Sunday's series finale, 11-10.
Hunter Jones and
Jontae Hennesy each reached base twice in the ninth inning to go with their 1-for-4 with two walks and 1-for-3 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch performances, respectively.
Elijah Laus (2-for-4) recorded his second home run as an Eagle for the maroon-and-gray's first three runs as part of his four-RBI day, while
Michael Adair reached base safely five times with a hit in all three of his at-bats and two walks.
Starting pitcher
Evan Ballast and
Naut Kragt earned no-decisions after pitching the first two innings allowing just three hits and zero runs. In his one inning of work, Kragt faced just four batters.Â
How it happened
- Oklahoma Christian claimed the first four runs of the game behind a three-run home run from Laus in the second inning followed by a Trey Migl RBI-ground-out in the fourth for the 4-0 lead.
- In the home-half of the fourth, however, SEU tied it up with a grand slam after being held scoreless . The Hilltoppers then added seven runs in the sixth and seventh inning to open an 11-4 advantage.
- After being held scoreless for four innings, the Eagles posted their highest scoring inning of the game after being down to their last three outs. Oklahoma Christian scored three runs before the second out and then the maroon-and-gray really threatened, with some help from SEU.
- The Eagles scored their next three runs while putting the ball in play just once, all of which came with two outs. With the bases loaded, the Hilltoppers were able to escape with the one-run lead after a ground-out to the pitcher.
