Baseball Jumps Ahead in Series with Pair of Wins Saturday

LAREDO, Texas - After falling in game of the weekend series, Oklahoma Christian stole two games from Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon, 13-8 and 8-5, to stand one game away from winning the series.

Hunter Jones claimed three home runs on the day to help lead OC to the victories after batting a combined 4-for-6 (.667) with eight total RBI and five runs scored. Jones is now third in the Lone Star Conference with seven home runs on the young season.

Chris Jones (2-1) and Tim Malone (1-0) picked up wins on the mound in games one and two, respectively. After Jones pitched five innings with seven strikeouts in the former contest, Malone picked up the win in relief in game two after not allowing a single hit or run in one inning of work.

Oklahoma Christian (4-11, 4-11 LSC) will return for the series finale Sunday, Mar. 2 at 1 p.m. in an effort to win its first conference series since hosting this same Texas A&M International team last season.

Game One: Oklahoma Christian 13, Texas A&M International 8
  • After OC took the early lead with a Reed Thomas RBI-single, TAMIU used back-to-back crooked-number innings for the 4-1 lead. That lead stayed intact though the third inning before the Eagles put together a five-run fourth.
  • All nine batters came to the plate as the maroon-and-gray strung together four hits and two walks to take the lead. Facing two outs and a new pitcher, Thomas gave Oklahoma Christian its second lead of the game with his second and third RBI of the contest.
  • Now sporting a 6-4 lead, the Eagles backed up their five-run fourth with a five-run fifth inning, this time courtesy of three hits, two hit-by-pitches and a walk, as OC opened an 11-4 lead. Trey Migl and Jones recorded a two-RBI single and double, respectively, while Thomas recorded his fourth RBI.
  • International cut Oklahoma Christian's lead to three, 11-8, before Jones used his first home run of the day to extend the lead to five. The Dustdevils were able to load the bases and bring the tying-run on the on-deck circle, but Naut Krag struck out the final batter to clinch the 13-8 victory.
Game Two: Oklahoma Christian 8, Texas A&M International 5
  • Jones started off game two on fire, recording a home run in each of his first two at-bats to give OC a 3-1 lead with play moving into the bottom of third. Starting with Jones' final at-bat of game one, three straight at-bats resulted in home runs for the senior catcher.
  • International matched Oklahoma Christian stride-for-stride through the first three innings, matching the Eagles' two-run third with its own two runs to tie it up, 3-3. The maroon-and-gray were able to get a bit of breathing room in the fourth as a two-run frame with TAMIU's single run put OC ahead, 5-4.
  • The Dustdevils gave the game its third tie in the fifth inning, 5-5, before Thomas once again came up big for the visiting Eagles. With the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, Thomas delivered his fifth and sixth RBI of the day to put OC out front, 7-5, before Ryan Carolan added an RBI-double.
  • Sporting a three-run lead, Michael Adair came to the mound for TAMIU's final half-inning. With one out and two Dustdevils on base, Adair issued a game-sealing double-play for his first save in an Eagles uniform.
