EDMOND, Okla. - After spending a weekend in Gulf Shores, Ala., the Oklahoma Christian softball program played its first games on Tom Heath Field this season, where it posted victories over Missouri S&T, 7-3, and No. 20 Southern Nazarene, 4-2.
Jill Dickson (3-0) and
Grace Anderson (2-1) each claimed wins in the circle while
Kadence Brewster finished the day going 3-for-6 at the plate while also picking up the save against the Miners in game one.
Marti Yaerger and
Maci George matched Brewster as the only Eagles to claim hits in both games.
Oklahoma Christian (5-1, 0-0 LSC) will return to Lawson Softball Complex Saturday, Feb. 8 for two more games against (RV) Pittsburg St. and Oklahoma Baptist at 3 p.m. and 5:15, respectively. Â
GAME ONE: No. 24 Oklahoma Christian 7, Missouri S&T 3
After a scoreless first inning, the Miners got on the board first with two runs in the second frame. The visitors held that lead until the third when OC, already having cut into the lead by one run in the second, used a
Karsyn Iltis RBI-single to not things up at 2-2.
From there, Dickson got into her groove in the circle, holding MST scoreless the rest of her time. The Miners saw one more hit off Dickson as the Eagles took their ace's cue and added another six more runs during her stretch before Brewster relieved her in the seventh.
Holding the five-run lead, Brewster found herself having to work out of a bases-loaded jam as the tying run came to the plate with just one out. The Wichita, Kan., native claimed a second-out punch-out before a pop-up to short stop ended the threat, giving OC the game-one victory.Â
GAME TWO: No. 24 Oklahoma Christian 4, No. 20 Southern Nazarene 2
In the night cap, it was Oklahoma Christian's turn to get started fast, plating three runs in its first at-bat. After
Maci George sent an RBI-double down the left-field line,
Kate Paulsen brought George home two batters later with her first career home run to establish a 3-0 lead.
A bizarre bunt-turned-error-induced-inside-the-park home run in the fourth extended the lead to 4-0 before Anderson took control. With OC's offense unable to add to its lead, Anderson held the No. 20 ranked Crimson Storm hitless until the fifth inning.
Southern Nazarene was able to finally get on the board with a lead-off home run in the top of the sixth, followed by another run in the seventh, but just as game one ended, a pop-up to short stop completed the 2-0 day for the maroon-and-gold.
