EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian used a 23-point first-half lead to hold off a late comeback from Sul Ross State Thursday night inside the Payne Athletic Center, 76-71.
Miles Gibson and
Bryce Kennedy each recorded double-doubles, serving as the main catalysts for OC's 44-32 rebounding advantage over the Lobos.
Marco Foster recorded his second straight game with 19 points while
Javon Grant dished out a career-high nine assists.
Oklahoma Christian dominated the first half, holding SRSU to just six made field-goals on 25 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes while the Eagles logged 15 made baskets at a 34.9 percent clip over the same stretch.
Sul Ross claimed its first and only lead of the game 22 seconds into action with one of its two first-half three-pointers. A
Nickolas Traylor triple 16 seconds later tied it up, and OC never trailed again. After SRSU's first basket of the game, the maroon-and-gold mounted a 23-2 run.
With 9:58 remaining in the opening half, Oklahoma Christian turned a 23-5 lead into a 36-13 advantage before both teams went into the locker room with the score in favor of the Eagles, 36-19.
After making just six field-goals in the entire opening half, Sul Ross matched that just eight minutes and 15 seconds in second-half action. Between trips to the free-throw line and the ball starting to go through the hoop for the Lobos, OC saw its lead whittled all the way down to four with 10:35 remaining in regulation, 46-42.
The Eagles quickly reestablished their double-digit lead with a 10-2 run before Sul Ross again brought it to four with just over 1:30 on the clock. Oklahoma Christian put the Lobos away for good, making its next seven free-throw attempts for the 76-71 victory.
The maroon-and-gray (8-17, 5-15 LSC) will return to the hardwood Saturday, Feb. 22 for Senior Day against the Western New Mexico Mustangs at 3 p.m.
