OC Wins Sixth Straight with 3-1 Victory Over St. Edward's

EDMOND, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian reached 14 consecutive set victories Friday night before posting its sixth straight victory after defeating St. Edward's on Halloween night, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19.

It was a an entire team defensive effort to withstand a scrappy Hilltopper squad as five Eagles recorded 10 or more digs, led by Macey Nehring with 13, while three other OC players pitched in with five or more blocks. Both Sophie Mae Smith and Summer van Meerveld tallied double-doubles with a 23-assist, 12-dig performance and a 21-assist, 10-dig showing, respectively.

Both teams came out hot in the opening set with OC hitting .290 while SEU hit .237. The Hilltoppers held a 13-10 lead before three straight St. Edward errors brought Oklahoma Christian right back into contention. Play saw three more ties before another Eagle 3-0 burst led to a first-set, 25-21 victory.

St. Edward's held another early lead before a 5-0 run was the Eagles' weapon of choice this time to take the lead for good at 9-6. Though SEU brought the score within one two different times late, three kills from three different players and a block assist from Camryn McGough and Annie Davis allowed OC to put it away late, 25-23.

Come the third frame, when the Hilltoppers had held the early lead in each of the first two stanzas, the Eagles were the team to see the early advantage, 10-7. St. Edward's came through with its best hitting set of the evening, however, as SEU used a .300 clip to force a fourth set - the first fourth set forced against the maroon-and-gray in four matches - 25-22.

In what would wind up being the final set of the night, Oklahoma Christian took an early lead and this time held the advantage throughout. With its best offensive set of the night, Oklahoma Christian used 18 kills, with six of Davis' team-high 16 winners coming in the final frame, to take the match, 25-19.

Oklahoma Christian (16-7, 8-4 LSC) will return to The Nest as the calendar moves to November when the Eagles take on St. Mary's in a battle of 8-4 teams in LSC play Saturday at 2 p.m.
