EDMOND, Okla. - Those who filled the Payne Athletic Center Friday night witnessed history as Oklahoma Christian upset No. 22 Angelo State in five sets, 28-26, 14-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-12.
In front of an electric home crowd, OC posted the program's first win over an AVCA top-25 opponent in the NCAA Division II era. With the victory, the maroon-and-gray are off to its best 12-match start in program history at 9-3.
Annie Davis delivered a match-high 18 kills, marking her fourth match with at least 14 kills in her last five outings.
Sophie Mae Smith and
Chloe Jones each produced double-doubles with the former leading the way with team-highs in assists (26) and digs (17) while Jones posted a 13-kill, 13-dig showing.
Lauren Cary did a little bit of everything to help OC pull of the top-25 upset, stuffing her stat sheet with seven kills on a .400 attack percentage, four blocks, including three solo rejections, and a pair of assists and digs.
Both Oklahoma Christian and Angelo started out stride-for-stride, trading off three-run spurts to sit tied, 10-10. Neither team saw more than a two-point lead the rest of the way until a two-point advantage is all OC needed. Tied at 26-26, a Cary kill followed by a set error from ASU handed the Eagles their first set win over the Rambelles since 2022.
The second set showed the dominance of the defending national runner-ups as Angelo won the frame going away, 25-14. With it looking like ASU had regained its footing in the match, OC remained in the fight at 10-10 in set three. From there, a 7-1 run put the crowd into a frenzy as the Eagles rode the momentum to a 25-17 win.
As the teams had done in the previous three sets, both sides continued to match each other blow for blow. After OC opened a 5-1 lead in the fourth frame, a 5-0 run from ASU handed the Rambelles the 6-5 lead. The visitors made a few more runs than the Eagles in the stanza as a fifth set was forced, 25-20.
Angelo held the lead through the early going of the winner-take-all set, though the lead never was greater than two. The Eagles broke through with a quick three points off two Rambelle attack errors and a
Payton Cash kill to take the 10-8 lead. With the home crowd intent on ushering the maroon-and-gray to victory, OC matched ASU the rest of the way.
Holding a 12-11 lead, senior
Annie Davis delivered back-to-back kills to bring on match point before setter
Summer van Meerveld snuck in the match-deciding kill, 15-12.
Oklahoma Christian (9-3, 2-1 LSC) will return to the Payne Athletic Center for the season's second meeting against UT Permian Basin Saturday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m.
