KEARNEY, Neb. - On the final day of the Rosella Meier UNK Fall Classic, Oklahoma Christian split its two final matches with a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney before sweeping the University of Mary, 3-0.
Riley Daugherty led the OC attack for the day with 17 total kills, including a 14-kill, 12-dig performance in the final match of the two-day tournament, as the senior transfer now has 950 career kills. Middle blocker
Camryn McGough backed up Daugherty with 11 kills on a .207 hitting percentage and six blocks.
Oklahoma Christian (7-1, 0-0) now heads to the Lone Star state for the LSC Challenge, where the Eagles will take on three conference foes in non-conference action. The first match of the three-day challenge will be against St. Mary's Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m.
MATCH ONE: No. 6 Nebraska-Kearney 3, Oklahoma Christian 0
An early 4-4 tie was quickly erased with a UNK 6-1 run before OC got it back with three points, 12-9. As play continued, however, the No. 6 team in NCAA Division II did not look back to the tune of a 25-14 first-set victory. Much of the same was to be had in sets two and three as the Lopers continued their streak of not losing a single set to open the 2024 season.
MATCH TWO: Oklahoma Christian 3, University of Mary 0
The Eagle defense did not allow Mary to hit better than .122 in any set as three OC defenders picked up at least 12 digs, including
Sara Freeman with a team-high 20 saves, while McGough and
Megan Rek occupied the net with three blocks a piece.
A tight first set was opened up with an Oklahoma Christian 5-1 run to turn a 9-8 slight edge into a 14-9 advantage. That five-point lead grew to a six-point first-set win, 25-19. The momentum of that opening set win continued into the second as OC delivered the first nine points of that second stanza to help bolster a 25-22 triumph.
The Eagle defense saved its best set for last as Oklahoma Christian held Mary to a -.022 attack percentage. Like the first set, the third frame was tight through the early going before the OC defense turned it on. With the score tied, 13-13, a 7-1 run helped by four Marauder attack errors allowed the Eagles to complete the sweep with a 25-17 third-set win.
