MCKINNEY, Texas - Oklahoma Christian men's golfer
Exequiel Rodriguez was named the 2024 Lone Star Conference Fred Jacoby Academic Male Athlete of the Year, presented by Barnes & Noble College, the league announced.
Rodriguez is the first OC student-athlete, male or female, to ever earn the conference's academic honor. The nod comes one year after Rodriguez was also named the the 2023 LSC Male Golfer of the Year.
"To stack [those awards] together in consecutive years is incredibly impressive," head coach
David Lynn said, "It speaks to Exequiel's frame of mind and how he operates; how you do any one thing is how you do everything."
A junior majoring in computer science, Rodriguez has a 4.00 grade-point average and is an OC President's List honoree, the LSC 2024 Men's Golf Academic Player of the Year and Commissioner's Honor Roll award recipient.
In addition to his work in the classroom this past year, the Buenos Aires, Argentina, native helped lead the OC men's golf program to its third consecutive National Semifinals appearance, including National Runner-Up finishes in 2022 and 2023.
Individually, Rodriguez has garnered back-to-back GCAA Second Team All-America honors as well as a pair of Top-5 individual finishes in the 2023 and 2024 NCAA Division II National Championships.
"The example that he is setting for our group is pretty incredible," Lynn said. "The discipline that allows him to be successful in the classroom translates over to the golf course and [his teammates] see that. They see how he goes about things, how he practices, his time management, etc. It is a lot of hard work on his side and that is what is impressive as a coach; that a kid is working so hard to be so successful in the classroom and being successful on the golf course is just incredible."
Lynn, Rodriguez and the team will begin their 2024-25 season this fall as the Eagles will look to build on their most recent national success.
