Softball Goes Undefeated at South Central Regional, Earns Program’s First Trip to NCAA DII Super Regionals

Canyon, Texas - Oklahoma Christian looked to make program history on Saturday night, and all that stood between them and its first trip to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals, was the No. 1 team in the nation, and host school, West Texas A&M.

West Texas A&M struck first, hitting a solo home run in the top of the first inning, and a two-run shot in the top of the third to give them a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles erased the three-run lead in the fourth inning, hanging a six on the board to take a 6-3 lead. Kristen Whitehouse got the scoring started, driving in Aaliyah Brown on an RBI single.

OC had the bases loaded at that point, forcing a pitching change, and WT's new pitcher threw her first pitch into the dirt, allowing Kadence Brewster to score on a wild pitch. Kiley Brewster followed that up with a two-RBI single to center, scoring Whitehouse, and Tristyn Hamilton.

Aaliyah Brown capped the six-run inning with a two-RBI double through the left side of the infield, scoring Ki. Brewster, and Brooklin Bain.

The Lady Buffs responded, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 7-6.

Whitehouse, who might have been the tournament MVP if there was one, tied the game for OC in the bottom of the fifth on a moonshot of the left field wall, for her second home run of the weekend.

Oklahoma Christian held West Texas off the board in the top of the sixth and retook the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI walk from Karsyn Iltis.

Another WT solo home run tied the game in the top of the seventh, and after the Eagles threatened to win in the bottom of the inning, the Buffs forced extra innings.

Oklahoma Christian worked around a leadoff double in the top of the eighth, setting up a walk-off opportunity in the bottom of the inning.

Ka. Brewster led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, and Hamilton reached on a bunt to put runners on first and second. Whitehouse laid a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners to second and third with one out.

Grace Anderson, who went on to be the winning pitcher, stepped up with the runners in scoring position, and after fighting off a couple of pitches, sent one through the right side of the infield, scoring Brewster, and winning the game for the Eagles.

Up Next
Oklahoma Christian will advance to the NCAA Division II Super Regionals for the first time in program history, taking on UT Tyler, in Tyler, Texas, in a best two out of three series, beginning with a single game Tuesday night, followed by two potential games on Wednesday.
