Eagles Take No. 5 Patriots Down to the Final Shot

Oklahoma City, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian (9-11, LSC 6-8) hosted the number five team in the nation, Dallas Baptist (17-2, LSC 11-2), in the Nest and took them down to the final shot. 

First Half 

As the game began, both teams began fighting to gain momentum over each other. Dallas Baptist found some momentum by way of the Eagles making some unforced errors and were able to capitalize on the opportunity. The Patriots were able to grab an eleven-point lead at the under-twelve media timeout. 

In the next few minutes, the Eagles fought back and locked down on defense to bring the game within two points with just over six minutes left in the half. 

At the under four-minute media timeout, the Eagles gained the lead of a Hunter Staten three-pointer and momentum shifting the way of OC with time ticking away in the first half.

The Eagles were led in the second half by Hunter Staten, who led all scorers in the first half with thirteen points, and Moun'Tae Edmundson, who had ten points.

Second Half 

The second half opened with the Patriots looking to work the score back to their favor. DBU took the lead just before the first media timeout of the second half. 

With under ten minutes left in the game, DBU began to make mistakes, and the Eagles were able to capitalize. 

With just under four minutes remaining, the Patriots had a two-point lead. The Eagles went on a run and played lockdown defense to grab a two-point lead with just over a minute remaining. 

On the defensive end, the Eagles sent the Patriots to the free-throw line to shoot three and take the lead. 

With six seconds remaining, Karlyn Kenner took the last shot from the corner, but it fell short as time expired.

  • The Eagles were led by Moun'Tae Edmundson, who led all scorers with 24 points. He also finished with 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. 

  • Hunter Staten finished with 21 points, 7 rebounds, a steal, and 2 blocks.

  • Quinton Johnson and Tyrus Baynham combined for 7 points and 10 rebounds.

  • Karlyn Kenner finished with 6 points and 2 rebounds.

  • Javon Grant came off the bench, played big minutes, and finished with 7 points, 5 rebounds, and an assist.
