LUBBOCK, Texas - Three Eagles tallied at least five blocks while OC as a team recorded 26 block assists and four solo blocks to help Oklahoma Christian defeat Lubbock Christian on the road Friday night, 3-1.
With the win, OC (19-8, 8-5 LSC) is now sixth in the Lone Star Conference standings and is two matches ahead of ninth place with three matches remaining in the regular season.
Avery Cole and
Lauren Cary spearheaded the strong defensive effort with seven block assists and one solo block each.
Camryn McGough followed suit with five block assists. In addition to their defense, Cole and McGough came through on the offensive end as well with 13 and nine kills, respectively.
Adding to McGough's nine-kill, five-block performance was her .643 attack percentage, which is the third time in her OC career and second time this season she has hit .600 or better on at least 10 total swings. On the season, the Plano, Texas, native is 19th in the conference with a .287 attack percentage.
Sara Freeman recorded a team-high 21 digs in the four-set effort as she is now 13th in the league with 3.77 digs per set.
Chloe Jones and
Calli Collins followed the sophomore libero with 11 digs a piece.
Oklahoma Christian's defense proved strong right out of the gate, with two of OC's first four points coming courtesy of Cole and Cary blocks. Lubbock Christian was able to overcome the quick start, however, holding a 16-13 first-set lead.
Timely kills from Jones and Cole allowed the Eagles to slowly cut away at LCU's lead until, with the match tied at 24-24, back-to-back kills from Cole and McGough gave the visitor's the early lead in the match, 26-24.
Between blocks, kills and service aces, Cole and Cary had a hand in all first six points of the second set two as Oklahoma Christian maintained the momentum from the opening frame for a 7-2 advantage. Lubbock never got it back within three points as the Eagles dominated the second stanza, 25-16.
Once again, OC opened a large third-set lead, but this time LCU fought back all the way to the tune of 25-23. Oklahoma Christian did not blink, however, recorded the first four points of the fourth frame before the teams stood at a deadlock, 14-14.
With LCU moving ahead, 19-17, Oklahoma Christian's defense finished the job it started, with three of the Eagles' final eight points coming via blocks for the eventual 25-23 fourth-set victory.
Oklahoma Christian will remain in the Lone Star state for its final road match of the season when it takes on No. 13 Angelo State Saturday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
