EDMOND, Okla. - On a day where Oklahoma Christian honored its 2024 senior class, the Eagles won their program-record 20th match of the season in a 3-1 victory over Western New Mexico Saturday afternoon.
Chloe Jones finished off her record freshman season with her 18th double-double of the year as she added to her already-single-season program record 368 kills with a match-high 17 winners while committing just two errors for a .429 hitting percentage.
Senior
Miranda Polanco gave OC a spark off the bench when it needed it, making the most of her six total swings with three kills for a .500 average.
Annie Davis joined Jones as the only two Eagles to post double-digit winners.
Despite Oklahoma Christian opening multiple leads through the early going, the Mustangs kept answering with runs of their own before being tied, 11-11. From there, OC never trailed in the set, holding WNMU just enough for the opening frame 25-22 win.
Western New Mexico saw its best hitting set of the afternoon in the second, out-hitting OC, .333 to .034. That advantage was shown after the Eagles scored six of the stanza's first eight points. The Mustangs then turned it on with a 12-4 run that saw them open a 14-10 lead. Both teams traded points the rest of the way as WNMU tied up the overall match, 25-19.
This time around in the third set, OC opened a 10-3 lead, but this time maintained it to the tune of 25-14. It was the Mustangs' turn to score early in the fourth with a 3-0 lead before Oklahoma Christian fought back to take its first lead of the frame, 10-9. From there, the match saw six lead changes before a winner was decided.
At 23-23, Oklahoma Christian managed the final two points of the match for the 25-23 and keep its postseason hopes alive. With the rest of the conference beginning its final regular season match at 2 p.m., the Eagles can now sit back and watch as they know their part of the qualifying equation has been completed.
