AUSTIN, Texas - On a night when
Riley Daugherty reached her second big milestone of the young 2024 season, Oklahoma Christian women's volleyball picked up its first Lone Star Conference victory over St. Edward's, 3-2.
The triumph marks OC's third five-set victory of the season and its first five-set conference victory since meeting this same Hilltoppers team inside the Payne Athletics Center late last season.
The Eagles defense held SEU to .163 after allowing them to hit .352 in the season's first meeting. Aiding in the low attack percentage was a first-set .000 clip and a sub-zero percentage in the match-deciding fifth set.
True freshman
Chloe Jones administered a total of 60 swings in the effort, claiming a team-high 18 kills while hitting .200, marking her fifth consecutive match with a .200 or better attack percentage. Defensively, Jones also led the team with 25 digs. Senior
Avery Cole bolstered the Eagles' offense with a season-high 10 kills.
Daugherty increased her career kills number to 1010 as she followed Jones with both 12 kills and 24 digs. Jones, Daugherty and defensive specialist
Sara Freeman (23) each eclipsed the 20-dig threshold.
Oklahoma Christian opened the night with eight blocks in the opening set for the first-frame 25-18 victory - OC's first set win during conference play. The Eagles saw one more win while St. Edward's picked up wins in set two and four to force a fifth winner-takes-all frame.
The Eagles' defense saved its best performance for last, holding SEUÂ to their lowest attack percentage of the night at -.111. Early on, the hometown Hilltoppers opened a 6-3 lead before OC flipped the script, mounting a furious 8-0 run to take a commanding 11-6 lead.
Both teams traded points the rest of the way as Oklahoma Christian claimed its first win of the season, taking the fifth set, 15-11. The Eagles won the marathon match with an overall point total of 110-103.
Oklahoma Christian (9-6, 1-3 LSC) opens the home slate of its schedule when it hosts No. 9 West Texas A&M inside the Payne Athletics Center Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. Â
