EDMOND, Okla. - With the Lone Star Conference Tournament just over three weeks away, Oklahoma Christian is right in the hunt for the eight-team postseason with six conference matches remaining. Beginning the final stretch is Eastern New Mexico when the Greyhounds come to the Sooner State Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m.
EAGLE OUTLOOK (16-8, 5-5 LSC)
Oklahoma Christian played its seventh five-set match of the season Monday against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Eagles have now won six of those such occurrences with a 3-2 win over the Storm despite trailing 7-3 in the final frame. With the win, OC has now come out victorious in seven of its last eight matches.
With senior outside hitter
Riley Daugherty being out with injury the last few weeks, junior outside
Annie Davis has filled in nicely, totaling a team-high 108 kills in the last eight matches. Against Midwestern State on Saturday, Oct. 26, Davis recorded her 500th career kill as she is currently at 523, becoming just the second Eagle to ever amass 500 kills during her OC career.
In order for Oklahoma Christian to reach the Lone Star Conference Tournament for the first time ever, history would suggest OC will need to reach 9 or 10 wins. In two of the last three seasons, the eighth team in the LSC Tournament has had 10 conference wins. In the one outlier year, nine league wins would have landed you the seventh seed. Of OC's six remaining conference matches, four of the opponents are currently behind the Eagles in the LSC standings.
Oklahoma Christian has won two consecutive matches against Eastern New Mexico, including a 3-0 sweep inside the Payne Athletics Center in 2023. The Eagles held ENMU to a .167 team attack percentage while McGough led the OC offense with 10 kills.
Lauren McClure facilitated the offense with 30 assists while
Kathryn Christie spearheaded the defensive effort with four blocks to go with seven kills.
SCOUTING EASTERN NEW MEXICO (4-17, 1-9 LSC)
Eastern New Mexico comes into the Payne Athletic Center with some momentum after posting its first conference win of the season with a 3-2 win over St. Edward's. Prior to that, the Greyhounds had lost nine straight. On the season, ENMU is 1-6 in true road games and has won just four road LSC matches since the beginning of 2022.
The Greyhounds are third in the conference in opponent blocks per set, allowing just 1.58 per frame while OC is allowing only 1.6 blocks per set, which is fourth. However, ENMU is 15th in the league with a .125 hitting percentage while the Eagles are ninth at .217. Senior outside Darcy Dodd leads the team with 3.04 kills per set and 716 total swings while sophomore middle blocker Sophia Valdez paces the team with a .201 attack percentage.
