Eagles Improve to 6-1 in Five-Set Matches with Win Over SE

EDMOND, Okla. - In its final non-conference match of the 2024 regular season, Oklahoma Christian volleyball found its sixth five-set win of the season with a 3-2 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State Monday night.

The Eagles close their non-conference slate 11-3 in such matches this season, which is OC's best single-season non-conference record in the NCAA Division II era.

Southeastern actually hit .241 for the evening compared to .239 for Oklahoma Christian, however, the Eagles recorded a season-high 70 kills. Leading the attack was Annie Davis (18) with her seventh consecutive double-digit kill contest.

Chloe Jones tallied 17 kills, which is her most single-match winners since Oct. 5 earlier this season. Camryn McGough and Sophie Mae Smith were also exceptional in their roles, with McGough logging 12 kills and four blocks while Smith delivered a career-high 34 assists. Smith also recorded 17 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.

Southeastern opened the night with an early-match lead after a first-set 25-18 victory. After getting hit in the mouth, OC responded with 25-19 and 25-21 second and third set wins, respectively. The Storm flipped the momentum, however, and forced a fifth set thanks to eight fourth-set kills from 2023 Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Year D'Nari Mills.

Two more kills from Mills within the first five points of the fifth set had SE with a 4-1 lead early in the final stanza. Before growing the lead to 7-3, the Eagles' fortune changed, with bounces going their way as a 6-0 run brought OC to within six points of winning the battle.

The Storm refused to go away, fighting back to 10-10, but McGough and Jones combined to get the Eagles over the last hump. All five of Oklahoma Christian's final points came from the duo, including three kills from Jones well as a block assist courtesy of the Waukee, Iowa, native and McGough.

The Eagles (16-8, 5-5 LSC) begin their final stretch of the 2024 regular season Wednesday, Oct. 30 when they welcome Eastern New Mexico to the Payne Athletic Center. Oklahoma Christian will follow that with five more LSC matches before reaching the conference tournament Nov. 21-23.
