Baseball drops doubleheader against Hilltoppers

Austin, Texas - The Hilltoppers and Eagles met for the doubleheader portion of the four-game series this afternoon in Austin.

Game 1: SEU 7, OC 2

Blake Empkey gave the Eagles an early lead with a two-run home run scoring Preston King, who reached base after being hit by a pitch. The home run was his 6th of the season which leads OC, and the two RBIs put him in the lead for the most RBIs on the team with 17.

Naut Kragt, who picked up the start, made quick work of St. Edward's in the bottom of the first, setting the side down in order. And in the bottom of the second, Kragt worked around a two-out single to face one over the minimum through two innings.

Grant Lake picked up a two-out single in the top of the third before SEU worked out of the inning.

Three singles in the bottom of the third resulted in the Hilltoppers tying the game at 2-2 after three innings of play.

Each pitcher worked around two-out walks in the fourth, with Hank Heiselbetz drawing the walk for the Eagles.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Hilltoppers took the lead with four runs on four hits, and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave St. Edward's a 7-2 lead.

Jaren Hill picked up a two-out single in the top of the 7th, but SEU closed out the win with a flyout after Hill's hit.

Game 2: SEU 4, OC 1

Brady Wiesinger got the nod in game two and started strong, forcing double plays in the first two innings to face just one over the minimum.

In the bottom of the third, the Hilltoppers picked up a run on an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Jayvien Joesph and Blake Empkey led off the top of the fourth with back-to-back singles, but St. Edward's found their way out of the inning.

A double and a walk put runners at first and second in the bottom of the fourth, and SEU scored on an error to take a 2-0 lead.

Michael DiFiore worked a walk, and Hunter Jones reached on a single, putting runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the fifth. DiFiore cut the lead in half by scoring on an error, and Connor Jackson, who reached on the error, picked up a stolen base before SEU got the final out of the inning.

The Eagles defense turned another double play in the bottom of the fifth, and the offense looked to spark a comeback in the top of the sixth. With one out, Marcus Johnson and Aaron Hunter reached on singles, but the Hilltoppers responded with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.

St. Edward's picked up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead into the potential final inning.

Jaren Hill and Aaron Jones led off the top of the 7th with singles, and Connor Jackson was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. To the credit of the Hilltoppers pitching, they found a way to work around the bases-loaded jam and hold on to win 4-1.
