Staten’s Career Performance Leads Eagles Past Lions

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian (4-7, 1-4) closed out the 2023 portion of the schedule with a Lone Star Conference win in the Nest over Arkansas Fort Smith (1-9, 1-5), behind a career performance from Hunter Staten who made his first start of the season.

FIRST HALF 

The Eagles jumped out to an early 9-0 lead, with Hunter Staten hitting two from three to start off his career night followed by a deep three from Karlyn Kenner. The Lions were able to jump back into the game eventually grabbing the lead midway through the first half.

The Lions went to the bench early in the game and would find their offense from Roland McCoy, who would go to lead all scoring.

Staten would lead all scoring into half with fourteen points, and add four rebounds and three blocks to his stat line. 

AT THE HALF 

  • Went into half leading 34-29.

  • Both the Eagles and the Lions didn't have many turnovers, 8 per team. 

  • The Eagles shot just under 40% from the field, going 11-28.

  • Shot 35.3% from behind 3 line, going 6-17. 

  • And shooting 85.7% from the free throw line, going 6-7. 

SECOND HALF 

The Lions did not go down quietly, as they came out in the second looking to make a comeback. The Lions looked to follow the scoring from McCoy who dropped twenty-two points in the second half. 

The Eagles made sure that there would be no comeback of any kind from the Lions. OC saw scoring from all over the roster, including Moun'Tae Edmundson, who led the Eagles in scoring in the second half with ten points. 

Staten and Kenner had huge half's in the paint as they combined for 13 of OC's 18 rebounds. 

Behind the clutch free throw shooting down the stretch the Eagles were able to put the game away and end 2023 on a two game winning streak. 

NOTES

  • Hunter Staten put up a career high in points and finished with a 22 point, 10 rebound double-double. He also finished with 4 blocks and 3 assists. 

  • Moun'Tae Edmundson finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. 

  • Karlyn Kenner finished just shy of a double-double with 13 points, 9 rebounds. Kenner also finished with 3 assists and a steal. 

  • Bryce Kennedy finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds. 

  • Quinton Johnson finished the game with 7 points and 7 rebounds and a block. 

UP NEXT 

The Eagles will be on break until the New Year, where they will open 2024 with a road game against University of Texas at Tyler, January 4th.
