Volleyball Sweeps Weekend with Five-Set Win Over St. Edward’s

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Oklahoma Christian volleyball (13-12, LSC 5-7) came into the weekend looking for a sweep to make its push for the Lone Star Conference Championships, and they secured just that with a five-set victory over St. Edward's (7-18, LSC 3-10) on Saturday afternoon in the Nest.
 
FIRST SET
St. Edward's took a quick lead in the opening set, but Oklahoma Christian responded by taking control and opened a 13-7 lead. OC kept SEU at bay for a while, but the Hilltoppers rallied to tie the set at 19-19 before five ties or lead changes led to the Eagles taking set one 25-23.
 
SECOND SET
Set two was a reverse of the first set, with the Hilltoppers taking control with a lead of 14-9 until the Eagles came back and tied it up at 17 all. With the set tied, SEU bounced back from the OC rally, putting together an 8-3 run, winning the set 25-20.
 
THIRD SET
St. Edward's took a 6-2 lead early in the third set, but a 6-0 run from Oklahoma Christian featuring a Brylie Berryman ace gave the Eagles an 8-6 advantage. After a brief OC lead, SEU rattled off several points to win 25-19 and take a 2-1 match lead.
 
FOURTH SET
Oklahoma Christian responded in the fourth set by taking an early lead that turned into a 15-8 advantage, leading to a match-tying, 25-16 fourth-set victory.
 
FIVE SET
Sophie Mae Smith had two aces in a run at serve that resulted in a 9-5 Eagles lead in the fifth set. St. Edward's didn't quit, stringing together a run that tied the set at 12-12. Oklahoma Christian took the match to match-point three times before sealing the match on a dump from Rainey Aven, who led the Eagles attack with 44 assists.
 
NOTES
  • Annie Davis had another dominant performance, leading the Eagles in kills with 22 on .347 hitting.
  • Rainey Aven had her second consecutive 40-assist performance, dishing out 44 in today's match after her 41 last night. Aven had a double-double with 19 digs and added 4 block assists.
  • Megan Rek was a part of 8 of OC's 15 blocks in a dominant performance by the Eagles' front row.
  • Camryn McGough capped another strong weekend with 9 kills and 7 block assists.
  • Giorgia Turri also had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs.
 
UP NEXT
Oklahoma Christian has four matches remaining and sits two wins out of the win column of the current Lone Star Conference standings current eight place team. The Eagles will have a chance over the next four matches to crack the top eight and make the postseason, beginning with a road match at Texas Permian Basin next Friday at 6 p.m.
