Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Andrew Evers

Eagles dominate the Mustangs en route to 79-72 victory

Men's Basketball / January 23, 2022

Wichita Falls, TX – The Eagles started the game with a 12-4 run led by several Eagles, most notably Mount'tae Edmundson with 5 points and a steal. This run would continue and stretch to a 24 to 11 lead with 9:34 on the clock. OC as a team would shoot over 65% from the field, 65% from the 3pt land, and 75% from the free throw line. With 7:46 remaining in the first half, the Eagles would extend the lead again heading into the media timeout with a score of 32-13. Drew Tennial began to make his presence felt, scoring 12 points on 100% shooting in just 12 minutes. With 3:51 left on the clock, OC continued to maintain a 19 point lead, as they led 35-17. The Eagles continued their hot shooting afternoon by shooting 59% from the field. The 1st half ended with the Eagles leading 37-23, led by a tip-in with 10 seconds left as the teams went into halftime. Drew Tennial led the way with 14 points, followed by Karlyn Kenner with 7. Perhaps the biggest story of the first half was how the Eagles did not allow a single Mustang to score more than five points in the first 20 minutes of game time.

As the second half began, Midwestern State put in a couple of baskets to bring the lead down to 13. Karlyn Kenner put in a basket to keep the lead at 15, and both teams began to trade scores between each other. At the media timeout with 15:11 on the clock, the Eagles led 41-26. With 12 minutes left in the game, Hunter Staten put in a layup and drew the foul. He made the free throw, to make the score 46-31, when the 12 minute media timeout occurred. Time began to work against the Mustangs, and OC continued to put the ball in the basket. In the first 13 minutes of the second half, the Eagles were still shooting over 50% as a team from the field, which led them to a 14 point lead with 5:43 left in the game. With 3:22 left in the game, MSU began to hit a few shots, and the lead was trimmed down to 10. Then Karlyn Kenner hit two free throws to keep the lead in double digits. After this, the time would run out on the Mustangs, despite a comeback opportunity for the Mustangs, and OC would finish their great team performance with a score of 79-72. In one of the Eagles more dominating performances from this year, the Eagles led for almost 37 minutes of the game.
