PUEBLO, Colo. (May 6, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian made a six-spot jump into fifth place on Friday on the second day of the NCAA Division II South Central-West Super Regional at Pueblo Country Club, putting the Eagles into position to make a run at an elusive trip to the Division II Championship in the final round.
Led by a 5-under-par 66 from freshman
Exequiel Rodriguez, the Eagles posted a team score of 277 (7-under) to put their two-day score at 567. The top four finishers after Saturday's round will earn a spot in the national tournament and OC will start the day in a three-way tie for fifth, one shot behind fourth-place St. Mary's (Texas).
Midwestern State (Texas) shot into the lead in the 20-team field at 557, one shot ahead of Colorado Mesa. Tournament host Colorado State-Pueblo was third at 561. OC was tied with California State-San Marcos and first-round leader Stanislaus State (Calif.).
Rodriguez, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, posted his best collegiate round, navigating the 6,522-yard course without a bogey and finishing strong, with birdies on the par-4 No. 16 and the par-3 No. 17. He'll enter the final round tied for 11th among 108 players at 139 (3-under).
OC sophomore
Mateo Pulcini of Rio Cuarto, Argentina, turned in a 69 that included four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 No. 11. He was tied for 20th individually at 141.
Freshman
Oskari Nikku of Tuusula, Finland, and junior
Alejandro Armijo of Rio Rancho, N.M., each posted an even-par 71, in similar fashions. Nikku matched Rodriguez with a team-high five birdies but also had five bogeys, while Armijo had four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. Nikku, at 143 over two rounds, was tied for 32nd, while Armijo was tied for 38th at 144.
Senior
Andres Brictson posted a 72 and was tied for 58th at 146.
Midwestern State's Jake Doggett and Colorado Mesa's Dakota Gillman were tied for the individual lead at 135.
The Eagles will be in the next-to-last group of teams teeing off on Saturday, starting at 11:50 a.m. Mountain time (12:50 p.m. Central). OC will be grouped with familiar foe St. Mary's along with Cal State-San Marcos.
