COMMERCE, Texas (April 26, 2022) – No. 20-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce held off a rally by No. 15 Oklahoma Christian in one game, then rallied itself in the second game as the Lions swept OC 7-4 and 7-2 in a softball doubleheader on Tuesday at Cain Family Field.
OC (36-12, 20-8 Lone Star Conference) dropped out of contention for the LSC regular-season title with the losses, while TAMUC (39-11, 22-6) kept alive its hopes for the league crown. With two games left – both at Cameron on Saturday – OC could finish anywhere from second to sixth in the LSC.
TAMUC built a quick lead in the opener off OC starter
Kali Crandall (14-7), with Madison Schaefer and Chanlee Oakes each hitting a solo home run in the first inning. The Lions gradually extended their lead to 7-0 and looked to be cruising to an easy win.
But the Eagles made things interesting in the seventh inning, scoring two runs on a single through the right side by
Tristyn Hamilton and two more on an infield single by
Whitney Walde. The Eagles had two runners on base with one out, but TAMUC reliever Alyssa LeBlanc struck out both
Aaliyah Brown and
Abi LaValley to end the game. It was LeBlanc's second save of the season. Emily Otto (19-3) picked up the win in the circle for the Lions.
OC jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game, taking advantage of a key error by the Lions. Sabrina Anguiano tied the game for TAMUC with a solo home run in the fourth inning off
Grace Anderson (12-4) and LeBlanc gave the Lions the lead with a three-run homer in the fifth. Uxua Modrego's two-run homer in the sixth keyed another three-run inning for TAMUC.
LeBlanc (14-6) went the distance for TAMUC in the circle, recording seven strikeouts and allowing only three hits.
