Petrin named as Eagle of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 24, 2022) – A dramatic run to the national semifinals earned Oklahoma Christian bowler C.J. Petrin recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week.

Petrin, a freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn., qualified for the Intercollegiate Singles Championship at Stardust Bowl in Addison, Ill., by posting the top score in last month's ISC Sectional Qualifier in Dallas.

At the ISC, he struggled a bit during the six qualifying games bowlers rolled on Tuesday to determine the seeding for the match-play bracket, finishing 21st among the 24 competitors. But once in match play, Petrin shined.

He downed 12th-seeded Yannick Roose of Savannah College of Art and Design (Ga.) 617-563 on Tuesday afternoon in the first round, taking control early in the three-game match. The next day, Petrin beat fifth-seeded Bryce Oliver of Pikeville (Ky.) 639-587 in the second round, then held on for a 669-642 win over 13th-seeded Rok Kostric of William Penn (Iowa) in the quarterfinals.

That made Petrin the first bowler in the four-season history of the OC club program to qualify for the ISC semifinals – also known as "The Show" for bowlers, as the semifinals and title match were taped for future television broadcast.

The semifinals and final also are one-game shootouts and Petrin lost his to 217-183 to top-seeded Nathan Stubler of St. Ambrose (Iowa) on Saturday morning.

Others considered for Eagle of the Week included:

-- Jacob Mattox, baseball: In a 12-3 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Friday, the senior right-hander from Plano, Texas, pitched his second career complete game, allowing only five hits in seven innings and striking out a career-high 13 batters. That's the highest single-game strikeout total recorded this season by a LSC pitcher.

-- Grant Lake, baseball: Lake had his best day as a collegiate player on Friday, smashing three solo home runs – equaling his homer total for the entire season to that point – as OC swept a doubleheader from Arkansas-Fort Smith 12-3 and 7-2. The junior shortstop from McKinney, Texas, hit .429 (6 for 14) in the four-game series with a 1.071 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage while scoring five runs.

-- Caroline Schwab, women's track and field: For the second time this season, the junior from Andover, Kan., set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, this time in the University of Oklahoma's John Jacobs Invitational in Norman on Saturday. Schwab was OC's only event winner in the meet, topping a seven-woman field with a time of 11.21.63. That broke the mark of 11:30.06 that she set on April 8 in Wichita State's K.T. Woodman Classic. Before that, the former record of 12:01.89 set by Erin Sesemann had stood since 2011.

-- Grace Anderson, softball: The freshman right-hander from Tishomingo handcuffed a strong Arkansas Tech squad that's likely headed to the Division II postseason, allowing only three hits and recording six strikeouts as the Eagles won 1-0 on Tuesday to complete a doubleheader sweep.

-- Keiontae Williamson, men's track and field: Williamson ran a leg on the OC 4x400-meter relay team that posted a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 3:13.64 while competing Saturday in the University of Oklahoma's John Jacobs Invitational in Norman. The time ranks 21st this season nationally. Williamson also ran in the open 400 meters and finished 10th in a field of 36 men (that included numerous Division I runners) with a time of 49.08 seconds.

The Eagle of the Week award recognizes the top performer in OC athletics for the previous week. The honor is presented each week at least one OC athletic team is in competition.
