OKLAHOMA CITY (March 8, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian's deep stable of talented golfers was on full display during the Broncho Invitational, which ended Tuesday at Gaillardia Country Club.
The Eagles' B team – which included three players who have started at least once for OC's A team – finished a competitive seventh in a 14-team field, posting a final-round team score of 300 for an overall score of 616. That was good enough to beat A teams from five four-year schools, including Bethany (Kan.) of the NAIA and Central Oklahoma, Southern Nazarene, Southern Arkansas and Newman (Kan.), all NCAA Division II programs.
OC also produced the top finisher among Division II players in the 83-man field, as freshman
Dominic Wade of Scottsdale, Ariz., followed up his even-par 72 in the first round with a 73 on Tuesday to close at 145 (1-over). He finished behind only two individuals representing Division I power Oklahoma State (Tiger Christensen at 138 and Jordan Wilson at 140) and Southwestern Christian's Matej Babic at 144.
Wade, playing in only his second collegiate tournament, recorded four birdies on the 7,120-yard course on Tuesday, battling chilly conditions with temperatures that peaked only in the low 40s.
OC sophomore
Chase Gardner of Snohomish, Wash., posted two birdies en route to a 73 – a nine-shot improvement over Monday – and tied for 33rd individually at 155. One shot back, tied for 38th, was freshman
Joey Lewis of Oklahoma City, who closed with a 76 that included four birdies – three of those over the final six holes.
The Eagles' other two B-team starters also improved round-over-round. Freshman
Santiago Villareal of Cordoba, Argentina, shot a 78 and tied for 55th at 160 while junior
Said Powers of Edmond posted an 86 and tied for 79th at 177. Both of them have started at times for OC's A team, as has Gardner.
Competing as an individual, OC freshman
Nicholas Gimotty of Overland Park, Kan., tied for 68th at 165. His 77 was an 11-spot improvement over his Monday score.
