OKLAHOMA CITY (March 7, 2022) – Freshman
Dominic Wade posted his best collegiate golf score and Oklahoma Christian's B team stood in the upper half of the field after a chilly first round on Monday in the Broncho Invitational at Gaillardia Country Club.
Wade, from Scottsdale, Ariz., fired an even-par 72 on the 7,120-yard course, tops among NCAA Division II players in the 83-man field. Wade joined Matej Babic of Southwestern Christian and Ben Partridge of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College in a tie for second, five shots behind Tiger Christiansen of Division I power Oklahoma State, who is competing as an individual.
The tournament had originally been scheduled for 54 holes, but was shortened to 36 holes after a frost warning on Monday morning resulted in a three-hour delay to the start of the round. Playing conditions throughout the day were difficult, with the temperature peaking at only 40 degrees and a strong north wind dropping wind chills into the upper 20s and low 30s.
Despite the conditions, Wade posted a steady round, with 14 pars to go with two birdies (on the par-3 No. 17 and the par-5 No. 3) and two bogeys.
The Eagles posted a team score of 316, which put them seventh among the 14 teams. OC's B team finished the round ahead of A teams from tournament host Central Oklahoma, Bethany (Kan.), Southern Nazarene, Southern Arkansas and Newman (Kan.).
Southwestern Christian posted a 298 and held the tournament lead by four shots over Hutchinson.
