KINGSVILLE, Texas (March 5, 2022) – Texas A&M-Kingsville limited Oklahoma Christian's usually potent offense to 10 hits over 14 innings and the Javelinas downed OC 5-1 and 4-2 in a doubleheader on Saturday at Nolan Ryan Field.
The sweep gave TAMUK (13-4, 11-4 Lone Star Conference) the series win, as the Javelinas have won the first three games of their four-game set against OC (6-13, 6-13). The Eagles will try to salvage at least one win from the series in the finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
All of the scoring in the opener came in the third inning. OC took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run to center field by
Michael DiFiore off TAMUK starter Kobe Jaramillo (2-0) before the Javelinas answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning, most off OC starter
Andrew Alonzo (1-2).
Jaramillo pitched five innings before Matthew Sesler and Luis Martinez combined on two shutout innings of relief, with Martinez picking up his first save of the baseball season.
DiFiore drove in OC's first run in the second game, in the top of the first inning, before Nick Wolff's solo home run for the Javelinas tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Ramsey Amador and Kyler Bumstead delivered RBI singles in the fourth inning off OC starter
Will Rodman (1-3).
Cole Lee's RBI double to left field in the top of the seventh pulled the Eagles within 4-2 but OC couldn't finish the rally against TAMUK reliever Colton Taylor, who earned his fourth save. Starter Logan Garza (3-0), one of the LSC's top pitchers, allowed three hits in six innings to pick up the win.
