Pulcini named as Eagle of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 20, 2022) – Recording his second career individual win while leading his team to its fourth tournament title of the season earned Oklahoma Christian golfer Mateo Pulcini recognition Sunday as the Eagle of the Week

Pulcini, a sophomore from Rio Cuarto, Argentina, took top honors in the Oak Tree Invitational, which No. 7-ranked OC hosted on Monday and Tuesday at Oak Tree Country Club's East Course in Edmond.

In a tournament that included three top-25 teams and 78 players, Pulcini shot 70-71-70--211 (+1) on the 7,126-yard course, including a steady final round on Tuesday that included two birdies, 14 pars and two bogeys. One of the birdies came on his final hole, when – while nursing a one-shot lead – he drained a tricky 30-foot putt to essentially seal his win.

He became the 15th player in OC's considerable men's golf history to record at least two tournament wins. Two days after the tournament, the Lone Star Conference chose Pulcini as its player of the week.

Others considered for Eagle of the Week included:

-- Abi LaValley, softball: LaValley, a junior infielder from Ada, drove in nine runs as the Eagles rolled to doubleheader sweeps of St. Edward's (Texas) on Friday and No. 23 St. Mary's (Texas) on Sunday. Against St. Mary's, she hit a two-run triple during a four-run second inning in a 4-2 win in the opener, then smashed her first collegiate home run – a grand slam – to put the Eagles up 5-1 in the first inning of the second game, which OC eventually won 11-3. She hit .417 for the week with a .917 slugging percentage.

-- Sofia Benavides Herberth, women's golf: Benavides Herberth posted a career-best finish with a third-place showing in the Midwestern State Invitational at Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita Falls, Texas. The freshman from San Luis Potosi, Mesico, shot 74-74-82--230 (+14) and finished second among the tournament's 48 players with nine birdies. She led the Eagles to a second-place finish in the nine-team tournament.

-- Dylan Burrows, men's track and field: In his first collegiate 1,500-meter race, Burrows posted a runner-up finish on Friday night in the Wes Kittley Invitational at Elmer Gray Stadium. The sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, placed second in the field of 40 runners with a time of 3:52.72, just .02 behind Mehdi Tanouri of South Plains (Texas) College.

-- Bryah Davis, women's track and field: In Abilene Christian's Wes Kittley Invitational, Davis finished sixth among 37 runners in the 100 meters with a time of 12.06 seconds. The sophomore from Cedar Hill, Texas, also placed 11th of 41 women in the 200 meters with a time of 24.79 seconds, her career best in an outdoor track meet.

-- Michael DiFiore, baseball: DiFiore, a sophomore from Lucas, Texas, hit .357 for the Eagles during a four-game series at No. 4-ranked West Texas A&M with a double, a home run and four RBIs. He improved his career homer total to 30, third-highest in program history.

The Eagle of the Week award recognizes the top performer in OC athletics for the previous week. The honor is presented each week at least one OC athletic team is in competition.
