TAMIU takes doubleheader from Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 28, 2022) – A strong pitching performance in one baseball game and a big inning in the other lifted Texas A&M International to a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Monday afternoon at Dobson Field.

TAMIU pitcher Jan Cabrera threw a complete-game two-hitter as the Dustdevils won the opener 5-0, and TAMIU seized control of the second game with a five-run fifth inning en route to a 13-8 win.

The sweep gave TAMIU (7-10, 7-9 Lone Star Conference) a split of the four-game series with OC (6-10, 6-10), as the Eagles swept the Dustdevils in a Sunday doubleheader.

In Monday's seven-inning opener, Cabrera (3-1) allowed only a second-inning bloop single by Grant Lake and a fourth-inning double by Michael DiFiore and struck out seven OC batters. OC starter Sam Webb (0-1) struck out six batters in five-plus innings.

OC led the second game 4-3 before TAMIU's fifth-inning outburst. Down 10-4, the Eagles rallied with a four-run seventh-inning, highlighted by a bases-loaded double by Grant Lake that brought home three runs, but the Dustdevils sealed the win with a three-run ninth inning.

TAMIU starter Joseph Garza-Delapen (2-1) pitched six innings to record the win, while reliever Kyle Higgins (0-1) took the loss for OC.

The Eagles will have a quick turnaround this week, as they're scheduled to visit Texas A&M-Kingsville for a four-game series that will start Friday. OC's next home series will be March 11-13 against St. Edward's (Texas).
