Johnson posts career high but Angelo State downs Eagles

OKLAHOMA CITY (Feb. 19, 2022) – Playing his final basketball game in the Eagles' Nest, Oklahoma Christian senior Anthony Johnson would not be denied on Saturday, matching his career-high in scoring with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting.

But unfortunately for Johnson and the Eagles, Angelo State (Texas) had too much firepower on both ends of the court, pulling away in the second half for what eventually was a 91-79 win over OC in the Eagles' Nest.

With the loss, OC (8-17, 4-10 Lone Star Conference) was eliminated from consideration for the LSC postseason tournament. The Eagles have two games remaining, both on the road – on Thursday at Dallas Baptist (Texas) and next Saturday at Midwestern State (Texas).

Angelo State (18-8, 8-6) solidified its postseason credentials with the win. The Rams shot 53.3 percent (32 of 60) from the field, posted a 50-38 scoring edge on shots in the paint and outrebounded OC 40-30.

The Eagles remained within striking distance in the first half and came as close as 40-34 with 2:26 left in the half before trailing 46-36 at halftime.

Angelo State led 58-45 after OC's Moun'Tae Edmundson scored with 13:20 left before the Rams went on a 14-0 run to push their advantage to 72-45 with 8:31 left. The Eagles chipped away at that deficit for the rest of the game but came no closer than the final margin.

OC celebrated two seniors before the game, Johnson and walk-on Tucker Fuller, who entered the game with 1:03 left and scored his first collegiate points on a medium-range jumper with 49 seconds left.

Sophomore Drew Tennial posted a double-double for OC – his third of the season – with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Justin Nimmer added 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Lathaniel Bastien led five Angelo State players in double figures with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Dante Moses scored 16 points and Tyrell Carroll and Kelyn Pennie added 15 each.
