WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Feb. 26, 2022) – Midwestern State (Texas) scored the final six points of the basketball game as the Mustangs – who trailed for most of the game – rallied for a 67-62 win over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
Drew Tennial scored 21 points to lead OC (8-18, 4-11 Lone Star Conference), which wrapped up its season, as the Eagles did not qualify for the LSC tournament. The Eagles were undone Saturday by their free-throw shooting, making 6 of 15 attempts, while Midwestern State (13-14, 9-6) made 11 of 17 free throws.
OC led the game for nearly 27 minutes and was ahead 62-61 after a dunk by
Justin Nimmer with 1:54 left. But the Eagles missed two shots and committed a turnover on their final four possessions and Midwestern State took advantage. Amaechi Chuckwu scored on a layup with 1:25 left, and after an OC miss, John Weger made two free throws with 17 seconds left, giving the Mustangs a 65-62 lead.
The Eagles opted to go for a quick 2-point shot, but
Moun'Tae Edmundson missed a layup attempt in a crowded lane. Pierre Sanders sealed the win for Midwestern State with two free throws with :06 left.
Jermaine Carter led Midwestern State with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Sanders had 13 points.
OC led by as many as eight points in the first half before settling for a 35-34 halftime lead. The teams were separated by no more than three points the entire second half until Sanders' late free throws.
Edmundson scored 10 points for the Eagles. He and Tennial each hit three 3-pointers. OC lost despite committing only six turnovers.
