SAN ANGELO, Texas (Feb. 18, 2022) – Oklahoma Christian rallied from a three-run deficit to force extra innings, but No. 12 Angelo State (Texas) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the 10th to edge the Eagles 7-6 on Friday at Foster Field.
OC had 10 hits – with
Chance Westervelt,
Grant Lake and
Kevin Collyar recording two each – but Angelo State rolled up 15 against six pitchers. Justin Lee went 3 for 5 for the Rams.
OC (3-6, 3-6 Lone Star Conference) took advantage of an error by Angelo State (7-2, 7-2) in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Rams took a 5-2 lead with a four-run fourth inning, as their first six batters of the inning reached base before
Sam Webb exited the OC bullpen and thwarted that outburst.
Webb blanked Angelo State for three innings, giving the Eagles time to rally.
Preston King's RBI single pulled OC within 5-3 in the sixth inning, and in the top of the seventh, OC broke through for three more runs. Lake's two-run double scored
Tanner White and Westervelt to tie the game, and Lake scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Collyar.
Tripp Clark tripled for the Rams with one out in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a single by Tayten Treadaway. But with a runner on third base and one out, Angelo State didn't score against another OC reliever,
Jacob Mattox, who quieted the threat.
Angelo State left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever
Matthew Shira (0-1), but the Rams broke through in the 10th. With one out, Aaron Walters walked and then moved to third base on a two-out single by Lee. An error on King, playing third base, allowed Clark to reach while Walters scored the winning run.
Carson Childers (1-0) allowed only one hit and struck out five batters in 3 2/3 innings of relief to pick up the pitching win for Angelo State.
The baseball teams will play a doubleheader with two seven-inning games on Saturday at 1 p.m., then will conclude the four-game series with a nine-inning game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
