Late surge gives Lubbock Christian win, sweep of OC

EDMOND, Okla. (Feb. 13, 2022) – Lubbock Christian (Texas) hit a pair of late home runs and took advantage of a key error by Oklahoma Christian to beat the Eagles 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Wendell Simmons Field, giving LCU a sweep of the four-game series between the baseball teams.

OC (3-5, 3-5 Lone Star Conference) and Lubbock Christian (6-2, 6-2) were tied 1-1 through seven innings after a duel between starting pitchers Will Rodman (for OC) and Tyler Hardwick (for LCU). Rodman, a freshman right-hander from Coppell, Texas, scattered five hits and struck out seven batters in seven innings.

Senior left-hander Cole Lee (0-1) moved in from center field, where he usually starts, to relieve Rodman to start the eighth inning. With one out and a runner on first base, Lubbock Christian's Luis Navarro sent a towering shot over the right-field foul pole that umpires ruled fair, giving the Chaparrals a 3-1 lead.

Jarred Gibson walked and Larry Leitha followed with a single, and both scored on the same play on a throwing error, making it 5-1. In the top of the ninth, Eduardo Acosta hit another two-run homer to extend Lubbock Christian's lead to 7-1.

Tanner White, who had walked and scored on a double by Coleton Hinkle in the second inning, hit a solo home run in the ninth off Lubbock Christian reliever Peyton Hutson (1-0), but that was the only run Hutson allowed in 3 2/3 innings of work. He and Hardwick combined to allow the Eagles only five hits.

The series was played at Central Oklahoma's field because of ongoing construction at OC's Dobson Field.

OC next will visit LSC and NCAA Division II power Angelo State (Texas) for a four-game series that will begin Friday.
